Fitz Henry Lane — American, 1804–1865 — American Luminism
Fitz Henry Lane was a marine painter associated with the Luminist tendency within the Hudson River School. Based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he depicted the harbors, schooners, and granite shorelines of coastal New England, with frequent excursions to Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. Trained as a lithographer in Boston, Lane brought a draftsman's precision to his canvases, rendering rigging and hull construction with documentary accuracy.
