Ludwig Knaus was a leading figure of the Düsseldorf School and among the most commercially successful German genre painters of the nineteenth century. Trained at the Düsseldorf Academy under Carl Sohn and Wilhelm von Schadow, he established his reputation with finely observed scenes of village life, peasant gatherings, children, and rural festivities, often laced with gentle humor or sentiment.
