Bernhard Gutmann was a German-born American painter associated with the second generation of American Impressionists. Trained in Düsseldorf and later in Paris, he immigrated to the United States in the early 1890s and settled for a time in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he founded an art school before moving to New York.
