Courtesan With Plume And Veil
Henry Fuseli — Swiss-British, 1741–1825 — British Romanticism
Born Johann Heinrich Füssli in Zurich, Fuseli trained as a clergyman before settling in London in 1764, where he became one of the most idiosyncratic figures of late eighteenth-century British art. After eight formative years in Rome studying Michelangelo and the Mannerists, he returned with a vocabulary of contorted anatomy, theatrical lighting, and exaggerated gesture that he applied to literary and mythological subjects, particularly scenes from Shakespeare, Milton, and Nordic legend.
