Giuseppe Abbati — Italian, 1836–1868 — Macchiaioli
Giuseppe Abbati was a central figure among the Macchiaioli, the group of Tuscan painters who broke from academic convention in the 1850s and 1860s by building images from broad patches of tone, or macchie. Born in Naples and trained in Venice under his father, the painter Vincenzo Abbati, he settled in Florence and became a regular at the Caffè Michelangiolo, where the Macchiaioli circle gathered.
