Charles-Antoine Coypel was the fourth generation of a prominent French painting dynasty, son of Antoine Coypel and great-grandson of Noël Coypel. He served as Premier Peintre du Roi to Louis XV and became director of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1747. His output ranged across history painting, portraiture, and theatrical subjects, the last reflecting his parallel career as a playwright.
